The person undergoing this type of analysis only requires comfortable clothing without metal or plastic devices in the areas studied. If you are receiving calcium pills should not take it the day of study, but does not necessarily have fasted, nor give the patient or injecting any substance.

On the other hand, if the person has undergone a radiological study with contrast medium (x-rays that use a substance that makes visible the internal organs) must wait a week to perform densitometry, and it should be noted that this analysis is contraindicated in pregnancy.

Through this test is determining the content of calcium in the areas of greatest medical interest and the same density (number per square centimeter mineral in bone), for which they are used internationally established parameters, such as Score T and Z Score, whose values ??are interpreted by the endocrinologist, who gives the diagnosis of the calcification of the various areas, and if increased risk of fracture or not.

If the T score is very low, it indicates that there is osteoporosis, if it is moderately low, determine the problem as osteopenia or bone deficiency; where Z score, it analyzes and compares the results with the average, but with a group defined by age and sex.

Finally, it is interesting that only 10 to 15% of women at risk of osteoporosis diagnostic test done to prevent their occurrence. We encourage you to think about your health and avoid having to take medication is sometimes prescribed for periods up to five years or, worse, having to undergo surgery for them to put a prosthesis if it suffers fracture hip.

It therefore becomes important to be aware of bone health, diagnosis is done by calling or DPX densitometry, of which there are three types:

Axial skeleton. This test evaluates the quality of older bones, ie, vertebrae and femur (thigh bone). Since these are the bones that have higher risk of fracture, axial densitometry is the most requested by doctors to people with risk factors for developing osteoporosis. Has the disadvantage that its cost is higher compared with the other two.

Peripheral bone. This study evaluates the peripheral bones, such as the calcaneus (located in the heel) is cheaper and faster, and the measuring instrument, being much smaller than the previous one, can be moved easily, which allows many more tests People at risk for osteoporosis.

Ultrasound bone. Review, generally, a phalanx of a finger. This is further evidence that the two previous economic.

Specialized studies have shown a consistent relationship between bone loss in a skeletal site and what happens elsewhere in the same, which could substantiate that any of the tests described above could be used either to diagnose osteoporosis, but a larger investigations so far carried out (in 9 000 women who live in the U.S.) and published in the prestigious medical journal Lancet, by Dr. SP Cummings, in 1993, showed that the test that best predicted who presented femoral neck fracture was that which was done precisely at the neck of that bone. Therefore, today most physicians consider that the axial bone densitometry test provides more information.

Who are candidates for this test?

- Those who have suffered fractures due to bone fragility.
- Women who are in menopause and not receiving hormone replacement therapy (estrogen).
- People with a family history of osteoporosis, which are thin, tall stature and have the habit of smoking.
- Individuals who are taking medications that promote loss of bone mineral or have illnesses that decrease calcium absorption (such as renal failure or rickets, for example).

Technological advances in the field of medicine have led to the knowledge of more diseases and, consequently, the implementation of specific studies to diagnose conditions. In the case of osteoporosis there is a very effective test: bone densitometry.

Disease of our age, osteoporosis is already part of everyday vocabulary, but it would be worth remembering that this condition is characterized by decreased bone mineral density (calcium and collagen) when there is an imbalance in the cycle of reconstruction of the bones (forms least amount of bone tissue is destroyed).

These circumstances cause the bones to become porous, thin and fragile and therefore susceptible to fracture at the slightest effort. This situation is exacerbated by poor calcium and vitamin D (ensure that mineral absorption), but also involving the lower production of estrogens (female hormones), poor exposure to sunlight and a sedentary lifestyle, ie lack of exercise and movement Overall, among other factors.

Osteoporosis affects 1 in 4 women over 60, and 25% of people who suffer hip fractures die within the next year, also, those who survive this period may never regain their independence. In addition, once a fracture of this type are tripled the chances of a second injury in the next five years.

It is made by bone density tests, determining the density (thickness and texture) of the bones to determine the risk of fractures. This method can measure the amount of bone tissue contained in the body with the help of a device, the result is compared with the levels of bone mass that has a healthy population, information obtained by taking into account age, sex , race, height and weight of the patient.

Conventional radiography can detect fractures, however, only show bone loss when more than 30%.

Prevention

Preventive action should begin from childhood, go through puberty, the reproductive period and reinforced during pregnancy (at this stage the woman’s bones tend to weaken because the baby takes its nutrients) and menopause, which allow structures achieve greater bone strength.

You need to eat foods rich in calcium and vitamin D, sun-bathing and exercising, which can be supported with calcium supplements, multivitamins, supplements and food supplements and fortified products.

Women who are postmenopausal are advised to take calcium supplements with added vitamin D because it allows the mineral is best to set bones.

Treatment

- Be followed balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, which must be supplemented with nutritional supplements.
- When vertebrae break, causing intense pain in the back braces are recommended.
- Do not consume coffee, alcohol or smoking, can be used to deshabituantes of snuff.

- Imbalance between the rate of degradation and bone regeneration.
- Poor or no production of estrogen due to menopause.
- Low intake of calcium and vitamin D from an early age.
- Anomaly in the absorption of nutrients mentioned above.
- Smoking may promote the acceleration of the process.
- Prolonged treatment with cortisone-based medication.
- Heredity.
- Lack of exercise is a risk factor, since this activity stimulates bone formation. In addition, the frequent rest causes the calcium is removed from the body through the urinary tract.
- Women are more affected than men because their amount of bone tissue is 30% lower.
- Snuff consumption, alcohol and caffeine promotes calcium excretion through the urine.

Symptoms

- There are no symptoms in the early stages of the disease because the bone density decrease gradually.
- In advanced stages there is pain in back, hips, wrists and amtebrazos of sudden worsening when standing or walking.
- Chronic pain may occur in the back, in addition, where the vertebrae that form the spine are very weak may rupture spontaneously or following mild stroke.
- The most serious manifestation of osteoporosis is the occurrence of fractures in vertebrae, wrists, hips and shins.
- Reduced height due to curvature of the spine.

Skeletal disease characterized by reduced bone mineral density (calcium and collagen) due to imbalance in the cycle of bone reconstruction (less formed bone tissue is destroyed), which causes bones to become porous , thin and fragile, therefore, susceptible to fracture at the slightest effort or not.

This situation is exacerbated by poor calcium intake (contained in milk, cheese, cream and yogurt) and vitamin D (ensure that mineral absorption, and is found in liver oil, sardines, salmon, tuna, liver, milk and butter ), low estrogen production (hormones that maintain good bones, teeth and hair), poor exposure to sunlight and a sedentary lifestyle (little exercise), among other factors.

Importantly, much like what happens to the skin cells, bone is destroyed and replaced on an ongoing basis to keep the skeleton strong and healthy, however, when the destruction is faster than the regeneration, have osteoporosis. Importantly, over time, women who suffer from this condition can lose up to half of their bone mass.

Although osteoporosis is a disease that primarily affects postmenopausal women, at least 20% of people who suffer are men, and the rate is increasing as they live longer.

Postmenopausal Osteoporosis. It is caused by lack of estrogen, hormones that the body stops producing when you have the last menstruation.

Senile Osteoporosis. Occurs in people older than 70 years and is caused by deficiency of calcium and vitamin D, as well as imbalance between the rate of degradation and bone regeneration. It is twice as common in women than in men.

Secondary osteoporosis. Occurs as a consequence of other diseases such as chronic renal failure and certain hormonal disorders related to thyroid or adrenal glands, and that unbalance the calcium absorption process favoring the softening of the bones, is also associated with the administration of certain drugs, such as those containing cortisone. Less than 5% of people suffer from this type of osteoporosis.

Juvenile idiopathic osteoporosis. It is rare, of unknown cause occurs in children and young adults but have no hormonal disorder or vitamin deficiency.

While adequate calcium intake is important in maintaining bone health, excessive calcium intake can lead to increased bone porosity and fractures. Excess calcium deposits in soft tissues and bones, therefore, leads to development of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.

According to new research from Harvard University for 12 long years, more dairy products consumed, the greater the rate of bone fracture and brittle bones. In fact, in countries where the consumption of dairy products and, in general, levels of calcium in the diet are low, rates of bone fracture is also lower.

According to Dutch researcher, Klompmakers, excess calcium through dairy products and mineral supplements, the forces of bone building cells known as osteoclasts, to replicate prematurely, causing a rapid and premature aging of the bones. Excess calcium in the bones can lead to plaque buildup. Excess calcium may also be deposited in soft tissues in the bones, and prevent the body removes calcium from the bones, where it is stored until it can be excreted.

In Asia, where calcium intake is relatively low (100-200 mg daily), peak bone mass is reached later in life, and bones remain strong and resistant to fracture later in life. Ultimately bone health can be maintained by changing your lifestyle and taking balanced diet and stay active.

We must not allow ourselves to commit to be convinced that limestone toximolecular swallowing poisons or supplements anyway, to fill the void that the lack of real nutrition and exercise has caused. Therefore, osteoporosis can be prevented by reducing the intake of calcium, especially in countries where osteoporotic fractures are common.

More and more older people with brittle bones that can break easily with minor trauma. One of the most common injuries in elderly hip fracture is, its consequences can be frightening, dying between 10 to 20% more than expected for their age, and up to 50% are disabled. Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis are essential for maintaining good quality of life.

The habitual consumption of varied menus are the basis of plant products, along with moderate consumption of foods high in animal protein, accompanied by a glass of wine and topped with a juice rich in polyphenols or tea, can help prevent osteoporosis throughout life, besides being beneficial for general health.

Osteoporosis is a decrease in bone mass and mechanical strength resulting in susceptibility to fractures. It is the primary cause of bone fractures in women after menopause and the elderly in general.

Osteoporosis does not have a definite beginning and, until recently, the first visible sign of the disease used to be a fracture of the hip, wrist or vertebral body that causes pain or deformity.

The bones are undergoing continuous remodeling through processes of formation and resorption, and also serve as a reservoir of calcium in the body.

From the age of 35 inci loss of small amounts of bone. Multiple diseases or lifestyles can increase bone loss leading to osteoporosis at an earlier age. Some women are also prone to osteoporosis by low bone mass in adulthood.

Menopause is the leading cause of osteoporosis in women, due to declining levels of estrogen. The loss of estrogen physiological menopause or surgical removal of the ovaries, causing a rapid loss of bone. The women, especially Caucasian and Asian women have lower bone mass than men. Bone loss results in a lower strength itself, which easily leads to fractures of the wrist, spine and hip.

A higher probability of developing osteoporosis is related to:

Early menopause, natural or surgical

Consumption of alcohol or caffeine

Smoking

Periods of amenorrhea

Some medications such as prolonged use of corticosteroids

Processes such as thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis and problems that block the intestinal absorption of calcium

Dietary calcium for prolonged periods, especially during adolescence and youth

Sedentary lifestyle

Osteoporosis affects one in five women over 45 years and four out of ten of more than 75.

Diagnosis

It can measure bone mass, and hence its decline in the adult, densitometry techniques or quantitative computed tomography.

Osteoporosis is a serious disease, both for its implications as its frequency is increasing mainly due to an aging population. In osteoporosis, Prevention is the key. It can act at three levels: diet, exercise and lifestyle.

Diet

All Public Health International Agencies agree that diet is critical in preventing osteoporosis. Many studies emphasize the relationship between calcium intake and decreased number of fractures (especially hip). This relationship is maintained throughout life, and is especially important at certain stages, such as childhood, adolescence and menopause ..

Calcium needs begin before birth, when initiating the formation of fetal bones. The baby will take the calcium it needs from his mother, both during pregnancy and during breastfeeding, through milk. Therefore, pregnant women and mothers need an extra intake of calcium.

During infancy, the calcium requirement will increase, becoming maximal in adolescence. If calcium intake is deficient in these stages, adult bones will be weaker.

Osteoporosis, the disease that weakens bones menopausal women and pre-menopausal women is also recommended higher calcium intake, the same as when there is an established osteoporosis. It should be noted that the elderly effectively absorb less calcium.

Exercise

The proper and regular exercise is important to get a percentage of ideal bone mass and maintain bone in good condition.

There is evidence that postmenopausal women who performed physical exercise program, have a lower bone loss than those who do not exercise.

Postmenopausal women who exercise lose less bone mass “The bones, if not used are lost” and, therefore, each individual should stay as active as possible.

Before starting an exercise program if you have not practiced, consult your doctor, especially if there are heart problems or joint.

The type of exercise you choose will depend on the age and general condition. The frequency and intensity of sport must be tailored to each individual. Physical exercises are recommended for preventing osteoporosis: walking, slow running, normal or aerobic dance, climbing stairs or keep fit. They are contraindicated exercises including pushups, jumping or sudden movements, because they increase the risk of deformities or produce existing crushing of the vertebrae.

Lifestyle

The lifestyle includes all aspects of life that should be modified to help prevent or treat osteoporosis. No smoking or excessive drinking. This measure is useful to prevent osteoporosis and other diseases, such as liver cirrhosis, cancer, arteriosclerosis, etc..

Keep “postural attitudes” right when sitting, lying or moving. This measure is useful for avoiding combat pain and fractures. The correct posture to adopt are:

Sitting, should support your feet on the ground and having the back and neck as straight as possible. To this end, the chair will be straight and hard, not too low. Best not to sit in comfy armchairs.

Lying is recommended rather hard mattress and a pillow down, pulling her back or side.

To lift an object from the ground must be flexed hips and knees and keep your spine as straight as possible.

There should be caught objects above the head. The maximum allowed is to load an object at chest height.

To move heavy objects need to lean back and push back, avoiding, thus overloading the column.

It is important to remember that osteoporotic fractures may occur with minor trauma or even without them. Therefore should be monitored especially footwear used and soil conditions on the move. In this regard should be removed all the obstacles which impede ambulation, as the steps, and take precautions in the bathroom and kitchen.
