Benefits on The Mediterranean Diet
The traditional food of southern Europe is based on the consumption of cereals, fruit and olive oil, which makes it very suitable for addressing cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes and even dementia.
During the Third International Conference on Mediterranean Diet, held in Barcelona, ??Spain, showed interesting findings suggest that the elements of this diet, in addition to its good taste, providing protection to the heart and brain, mainly.
This feeding prevents cognitive impairment in the elderly, ie, concentration, attention and activities that require learning and understanding. This is because it is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids from olive oil. The information was obtained through a study that included 278 individuals over 65 who live in Casamassimia, southern Italy. Although this study is not conclusive, provides a hypothesis about the possible protective role of olive oil in senile mental disturbances. Read the rest of this entry »
Chinese herbs help prevent diabetes

Several traditional Chinese herbs would control the blood sugar when the risk of diabetes is high, suggests a new study.
The review of 16 clinical trials of 15 herbal formulas the herbs showed reduced levels of blood sugar in people with “prediabetes,” which are those with impaired glucose control can become type 2 diabetes. When the researchers gathered data from eight of these studies found that adding an herbal remedy to lifestyle changes doubled the likelihood of normalizing the blood sugar levels.
Moreover, people who had used the remedies were two thirds less likely to develop diabetes during the study, which lasted about 9 months.
The findings are published in the Cochrane Library, Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization that evaluates medical research. For authors, the results are “quite promising.” But they cautioned that the studies had some methodological biases, preventing firm conclusions.
“There are many herbal remedies on the shelves, but few were subjected to a rigorous test,” he told Reuters Health via e-mail the author of the study, Suzanne J. Grant, Center for Complementary Medicine Research at the University of Western Sydney in Australia.
Many of the trials analyzed, explained, were “high risk of bias” that might overestimate the effects of therapies. So, he added, is more rigorous trials necessary before recommending the use of herbal medicines to prevent diabetes.
The Emergence Of Type 2 Diabetes

Abnormal thirst and dry mouth, frequent urination, extreme tiredness / lack of energy, constant appetite, sudden weight loss, slow wound healing, recurrent, blurred vision…
The same symptoms listed above may also affect type 2 diabetes, but usually the symptoms are less obvious. The emergence of type 2 diabetes is gradual and therefore difficult to detect. In fact, some people with type 2 diabetes show no symptoms evident at first. They tend to be diagnosed several years later, when various complications are already present.
Threatening complications:
Without adequate production and action of insulin, glucose stays in the blood, causing chronic hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). This can cause complications in the short and long term, many of which, if not prevented and treated, can be fatal. All have the potential to reduce the quality of life of people with diabetes and their families.
The most common complications in the long term are:
Diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease), which can lead to total kidney failure and the need for dialysis or kidney transplantation.
The main signs of hypertension

Hypertension, commonly known as high pressure, is characterized by an excessive blood pressure on the artery walls. They say it is a “silent killer” because it does not manifest itself by external symptoms (unless hypertension is very high).
Without adequate treatment, hypertension can lead to long term, stroke, kidney disease and vision problems. Measuring blood pressure consists of two numbers indicating millimeters of mercury or mmHg. The optimal blood pressure is set at 115/75.
The causes of hypertension are not clearly identified, but we know that obesity and stress can aggravate it, as well as some bad habits.

Some typical signs of blood pressure are headaches, dizziness, struck on the ears and nose bleeding. However, some people feel a little pain in the back of his head or increased urination.
Despite increases in the urine can mean that your blood sugar is too high if you are diabetic. Therefore it is difficult to see signals. However, if you have diabetes and are experiencing increased urination, and headache, then just check your blood sugar and see if this is the cause. If not, then you can exclude from glucose, and if they have high blood pressure.
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs as a result of problems in the production and supply of insulin in the body. This hormone is produced in the pancreas and helps the “sugar” (glucose) to leave the bloodstream to enter body cells to be used as an energy source.
It may be the case that the body does not produce enough insulin, which is when the diabetes is type 1, or can not use it produces, that is when there is type 2 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes, which is also known as insulin dependent diabetes, immune or juvenile home, is the result of an autoimmune reaction, in which the body’s defense system attacks insulin-producing cells. People with this type of diabetes produce very little or no insulin injections they need every day and thus control the blood glucose levels. Type 1 diabetes can affect people of any age but usually occurs mainly in children or young adults.
People Who Walk Slowly, More Prone to Cardiac Death
Walking slowly not only delay the arrival at destination: According to a French team, the greatest who walk slow are nearly three times more likely to die from heart disease than those who walk faster.
The message to the general population is to maintain fitness in old age would have important implications and preserve life and function (muscle).
The expert said the study, published in BMJ, also suggests that a test of walking speed can know better the health status of older patients.
Previous studies have associated the slow gait with an increased risk of death in a given period, as well as to falls and other adverse health consequences, but none had shown the highest risk if the concentrated heart disease or other cause .
Aspirin, just for heart patients
People who have no obvious cardiovascular problems should not take aspirin as protection, says a study.
Investigation of Drugs and Therapeutics Bulletin (DTB)-Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin, says that the drug can cause severe internal bleeding and does not prevent death from cardiovascular disease (disorders of the heart and blood vessels).
He added that doctors should carry out a review of all patients currently taking aspirin as a protective measure against heart disease. Eating a low-dose daily aspirin is already widely used to prevent episodes of these disorders in people who have had problems such as heart attacks or strokes.
This approach, known as “secondary prevention is well established and past research has confirmed its benefits.
However, it is believed that many thousands of people in several countries taking the drug as a protective measure against cardiovascular disease before showing any symptoms.
“There is growing scientific evidence shows that benefits can not be identified by the use of aspirin in patients who have suffered heart attacks or strokes in the past,” the BBC said Dr. Ike Ikeanacho, editor of the DTB.
“At best, aspirin has a slight potential benefit in these people. But this benefit is offset by a real risk of the drug, including internal bleeding,” adds the scientist.
