In psoriasis, skin cells multiply rapidly, resulting in pain, itchy rashes. Although the exact cause of psoriasis is a mystery, a study by a team of American and Canadian researchers reveals a potential trigger of the disease: smoking.

A review of data collected in the Nurses Health Study, researchers reported the following results:
The risk of a smoker to develop psoriasis is almost 80 percent higher than that of people who have never smoked
Risk of developing psoriasis is more than 35 percent higher among people who are former smokers compared with never smokers (this risk remains elevated for as long as 20 years after quitting smoking)
Among smokers, those who smoke more are at high risk
Exposure to secondhand smoke also increases risk, especially among children
Researchers predict that treatments of psoriasis are probably more effective among non-smokers compared with smokers

Actually no one knows for sure what the ultimate cause of psoriasis, and why the process of renewal of the epidermis is accelerated among people suffering from this disease. What is clear is that this condition is present, it is necessary to have a genetic predisposition to it, and in fact one in three people with psoriasis have relatives with the same condition.
Not all people with this genetic predisposition manifested actively psoriasis. Usually several factors involved “triggers” in the process that triggers the disease.

Infections, certain medications (beta blockers for therapies for heart and hypertension, malaria medicine), wounds, sunburn, alcohol consumption or stress can trigger or aggravate psoriasis outbreaks.

Sunlight, in moderation and taking all necessary precautions (use of blocking, to avoid exposure during peak hours), may help maintain healthy skin in psoriasis patients. However, excessive sun exposure and without caution, may cause disease or aggravate existing injuries. The skin is no stranger to the overall health of a person, so that factors like a healthy diet, adequate rest and healthy habits eventually reflected in it. It is also extremely important that the skin is often moist, it avoids many of the annoyances to which faces a patient with psoriasis. Similarly, sun exposure with moderation and caution is a factor that can help the good condition of the skin.

Walking slowly not only delay the arrival at destination: According to a French team, the greatest who walk slow are nearly three times more likely to die from heart disease than those who walk faster.

The message to the general population is to maintain fitness in old age would have important implications and preserve life and function (muscle).

The expert said the study, published in BMJ, also suggests that a test of walking speed can know better the health status of older patients.

Previous studies have associated the slow gait with an increased risk of death in a given period, as well as to falls and other adverse health consequences, but none had shown the highest risk if the concentrated heart disease or other cause .

The investigation of five-year, part of the trial of Inserm called Three City Study, included more than 3,200 men and women with relatively good physical fitness, between 65 and 85 years who resided in three cities in France.

At baseline in 1999, the team used questionnaires and interviews in person to evaluate the health of each participant. Then, clocked the speed of each participant to walk as fast as possible without running, in a corridor.

In five years, 209 participants died (mostly from cancer, followed by heart disease and infectious diseases course and other causes), the mortality rate was 7 percent.

In the third who had walked more slowly (5.4 km/h or less for men and 4.8 km/h for women), the mortality rate was 44 percent higher than the two thirds of participants who had walked faster.

Mortality from myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and associated causes was 2.9 times more common in the slowest third of participants than among the fastest two thirds.

The increase in mortality from heart disease was seen in men and women was not associated with age or physical activity of participants.

There was no relationship between walking speed and other causes of death, including cancer.

What, then, what explains the relationship between walking and slow death from heart disease?

One possibility, is that the same risk factors that increase the risk of developing the disease, like high blood pressure and diabetes, also produce “silent stroke”, which prevent walking fast. That idea “deserves further studies to confirm it.

In a related editorial, Drs H. Rowan Harwood, Queen’s Medical Center in Nottingham, England, and Simon P. Conroy, University of Leicester, also in England, wrote that the loss of walking speed problems may appear in different organ systems, from the bones, muscles and lungs to the brain.

Some of these systems are linked through vascular disorders and smoking.

Osteoporosis is a decrease in bone mass and mechanical strength resulting in susceptibility to fractures. It is the primary cause of bone fractures in women after menopause and the elderly in general.

Osteoporosis does not have a definite beginning and, until recently, the first visible sign of the disease used to be a fracture of the hip, wrist or vertebral body that causes pain or deformity.

The bones are undergoing continuous remodeling through processes of formation and resorption, and also serve as a reservoir of calcium in the body.

From the age of 35 inci loss of small amounts of bone. Multiple diseases or lifestyles can increase bone loss leading to osteoporosis at an earlier age. Some women are also prone to osteoporosis by low bone mass in adulthood.

Menopause is the leading cause of osteoporosis in women, due to declining levels of estrogen. The loss of estrogen physiological menopause or surgical removal of the ovaries, causing a rapid loss of bone. The women, especially Caucasian and Asian women have lower bone mass than men. Bone loss results in a lower strength itself, which easily leads to fractures of the wrist, spine and hip.

A higher probability of developing osteoporosis is related to:

Early menopause, natural or surgical

Consumption of alcohol or caffeine

Smoking

Periods of amenorrhea

Some medications such as prolonged use of corticosteroids

Processes such as thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis and problems that block the intestinal absorption of calcium

Dietary calcium for prolonged periods, especially during adolescence and youth

Sedentary lifestyle

Osteoporosis affects one in five women over 45 years and four out of ten of more than 75.

Diagnosis

It can measure bone mass, and hence its decline in the adult, densitometry techniques or quantitative computed tomography.
