Smoking Can Trigger Psoriasis In psoriasis, skin cells multiply rapidly, resulting in pain, itchy rashes. Although the exact cause of psoriasis is a mystery, a study by a team of American and Canadian researchers reveals a potential trigger of the disease: smoking.

A review of data collected in the Nurses Health Study, researchers reported the following results:
The risk of a smoker to develop psoriasis is almost 80 percent higher than that of people who have never smoked
Risk of developing psoriasis is more than 35 percent higher among people who are former smokers compared with never smokers (this risk remains elevated for as long as 20 years after quitting smoking)
Among smokers, those who smoke more are at high risk
Exposure to secondhand smoke also increases risk, especially among children
Researchers predict that treatments of psoriasis are probably more effective among non-smokers compared with smokers
